Selma Lagerlöf’s (1858-1940) debut novel Gösta Berling’s Saga has been read by countless people. As one of Sweden’s most successful and acclaimed authors, she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, in 1909. She was also elected to the Swedish Academy in 1914.
